A Football Story
It seems appropriate to pen some profound missive about the ’85 Superbowl winning Bears, especially in light of their visit this month to the White House, a mere 25 years after the fact.
Yes, I know the circumstances. It had to do with the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which I witnessed while in Florida on the fateful day. It was a cold morning in Florida!
I took the photos used as reference for my painting in 1985 illustrating the Bears at Soldier Field. The Cowboys were chosen at the time to be the antagonists being the only other NFL team for who Coach Ditka played. It just seemed to be the right thing to do.
It was important to feature a play involving Walter Payton who was clearly the best player on the field that day. The painting was begun after the Bears came back to win big against Minnesota in game 5 of the ‘85 season. Jim McMahon came off the bench in time to throw three touchdowns, and eventually win the game. The painting was completed by game 7 and the posters arrived shortly thereafter.
The posters were an immediate success and became the most sought after memorabilia for that magical 1985 season. I miss Walter!
